Grandma's Velvet Crazy Quilt
I remember my grandmother working on piecing these blocks when I was very young. Velvet was hard to come by, so progress was slow...she worked on it for years. The blocks were pieced on heavy feed sack material and she embellished them with feather stitching between the pieces.
After her death I inherited the top which only needed a small corner finished. I added feather stitching between the blocks and a small amount of additional embellishments, still keeping it rather low key in her style. I then added a picture of her and her birth and death dates as well as a picture of myself and my birth date to represent the person who started it and the one who finished it.
Because the quilt was already so heavy it didn't need batting. I added a brown velvet border and used a lush green velvet for the back, did a turned edging and tied it with variegated crochet thread.
Grandma and I together have won a couple of ribbons with this quilt and it is truly one of my treasures.
